FTC Staff Warns Influencers and Brands to Clearly Disclose Relationship

Posted on May 1, 2017

All of you have seen tweets and Instagram posts which clearly were ads yet the poster, typically a celeb or ‘inflluencer’, did not note as such in their post. Now the FTC has taken stronger steps to make sure that if you post such an item, you must make it clear to the reader its an paid/sponsored ad. There is no official ‘tag’ to place but it must be clear the intent of the post. In addition, on Instagram, the post must be within the 1st three lines of the post as below that it does not show unless the viewer clicks the ‘more’ button hence many never see it.

Lord & Taylor was hit with a large fine in the past year for paying for Instagram posts and not having the posters indicate they were paid.
